If you haven’t renewed your STC membership yet, you’re late.
That being said, I’d like to hear why people are renewing and why they are not renewing their STC membership. You don’t have to tell whether you are or not (though you may), just discuss pros and cons to letting your membership go or renewing.
Also, please post your questions, suggestions, comments, and even complaints and comments about the STC membership process here.
If you need it, there are some helpful links for managing your membership here: http://stc-ct.org/membership.htm.

I renewed as soon as I got the notice. Whether I participate or not, my membership in a professional organization gives weight to whatever the organization undertakes on behalf of the profession.
Of immediate benefit to me personally is the opportunity to network. In a profession with a great number of free-lancers and loners, this is valuable.
For most of my professional life I taught school, and always joined the organizations representing the teaching profession in general and my discipline in particular.
There is strength in numbers.

I renewed. There are some good things in the pipe that I’d like to keep an eye on. I am, however, cutting back on involvement due to some changes in my job.

Cons: Cost, ROI for experienced writers, belonging can be a lot of extra work that isn’t self-satisfying after a long while. Online, other free lists and groups have it covered. In print … well, I read Intercom. Politically annoying after a while and smaller chapters seem to be marginalized.
Pros: Networking, job lists, discounted attendance at STC conferences, looks good on a resume.

I’m a senior member (or was) who did not renew. Some nitwit or collection thereof decided to axe the yearly salary survey in favor of government stats. This was done despite virulent member protest. 70% of the value of STC to me was in those numbers, which I used several times to get competitive pay raises. The rest of the value is in the lonewriter’s list – and many of those people chose to at least sign up, if not migrate, to Kathy’s gmail group. I get my sense of community from there now.
